Students in STEM Academy have been chosen by the Hamilton Partnership of Paterson and the Great Falls National Park to update the Mill Mile app, which is the free walking tour of the Falls.  Over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, STEM students will research, write, advertise, and launch the new app.  Participating students and teachers will not only have the opportunity to apply what they have studied in their history and applied technology courses, but they will also have the opportunity to put their stamp on Paterson’s history for years to come.

More information on the Mill Mile can be found at the following link: http://www.millmile.org/

STEM Principal Nicholas Vancheri and six of his colleagues in Montclair State University’s Teacher Education and Teacher Development (TETD) doctoral program were chosen to present at the 2017 AERA Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Vancheri and his colleagues will present the following paper at the annual conference: Research Reviews of Teachers’ Beliefs: The Heart of the Matter.  The researchers conducted a thematic analysis of 10 reviews of research on teachers’ beliefs from 1986 to 2015, which revealed five major themes across the reviews: (a) issues of terminology, (b) types of beliefs examined, (c) the complexity of teachers’ beliefs, (d) methodological challenges, and (e) recommendations forwarded.

The American Educational Research Association was founded in 1916 as a professional organization representing educational researchers in the United States and around the world. As a nonprofit serving the education research field, AERA strives to advance knowledge about education and promote the use of research to improve education and the public good.

Welcome Back to the Wonderful JFK STEM Family!

It is with great excitement that we officially welcome you back to school!  JFK STEM Academy has developed a wonderful reputation for providing a high quality education to its students and this year will add on to that legacy.

The staff and I are excited about the endless possibilities that this school year will bring.  We are looking to heighten our wonderful teaching by further focusing on differentiating our instruction for all learners, implementing our pathways in the STEM fields, and continuing to work with university partners.  The staff is committed to providing the best education possible to ensure that your children are college and career ready.  When your children leave the JFK STEM Academy, we want them to be ready to leave their mark on society and make you proud!

Your child’s homeroom teacher and room number will be mailed home this week.  Parents and students can also check their schedules via the parent portal on Infinite Campus.  Their schedule of classes will be given out in homeroom on the first day of school.  In terms of transportation, students will receive their bus tickets as soon as possible when we return back to school.  Until that time, we appreciate your cooperation in getting your children to school on time at 8:15 A.M. sharp.  We also expect all students on the first day to be in proper uniform.  The uniform consists of the JFK STEM polo shirt and khaki pants.  Cargo pants and jeans are not allowed.  Shorts are allowed if they are khaki and a similar style to the non-cargo/non-jean pants.  Students should not be wearing any shirts or jackets over their uniform shirts and should be wearing appropriate footwear (no open toe sandals).

It is a going to be a great year and it all starts with being on time, in uniform, rested, and open to learning.  The staff and I are here to help you and answer any of your questions or concerns.

Educationally Yours,

Mr. Nicholas V. Vancheri

Principal, JFK-STEM Academy

THE FIRST ANNUAL STEM FIELD DAY.

On Friday, June 20th, JFK STEM held its first field day.  The weather was perfect and the park couldn't have been any closer!  There was soccer, tennis, games and just soaking up the sun.  A great time was had by all.  All that was missing was an ice cream truck... something to plan for next year!

It's no surprise to either STEM teacher or students that Mrs. Abd. Elhafez would receive her Master's Degree or even that she would would be selected to achieve honors for her level of achievement. But we are very proud to announce this to all the people who may not know Mrs. Abd. Elhafez.  JFK STEM teachers continue to lead by example.  Thank you Mrs. A. for continuing to lead the way!

JFK-STEM Students celebrated PI Day on March 14th. The date of PI Day (3/14) matches the common approximation of the irrational number PI. Nearly 50 students were in attendance.  Mr. Coronato presented some facts about PI and held a contest to see which group of students could physically create the best circle by holding a heavy line around them.  The  winning group came closest to the ratio of PI. The winning group came within seven one-hundredths of the standard approximation of PI. The whole room sang a rousing rendition of the STEM PI Day song ... and of course ...

As the holiday season approaches, it's a good time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves as well as those who put their lives on the line for our freedom.  Our school is proudly running two drives we hope you will participate in.

AFOOFA CLUB is running their 2nd annual "Clothe the Homeless" Drive.  Please bring new or gently used clothing to the TEEN CENTER for distribution on Thanksgiving Day at the Masonic Temple.

Supporting our Soldiers Overseas, SET and The American Legion are collecting supplies and "treats" for our soldiers to help make the holiday season a bit cheerier and to let them know we are thinking about them.  A list of suggestions can be found HERE and donations can be dropped off in the SET office no later than December 1st.
