NJ Teacher of the Year, Amy Andersen, visited the School of STEM on April 17, 2018. Amy taught STEM students some American Sign Language (ASL) and discussed the role of language in deaf culture.  Amy also spoke to our teachers about her career and the wonderful work that she does promoting ASL programs, giving every student a voice, and advocating for acceptance of deaf culture in today’s society. STEM wishes to thank Ms. Andersen for spending her day with us!

20 Students from STEM @ JFK participated in “Columbia Splash” on Saturday, March 31st, 2018.  Columbia Splash is a program that offers a variety of courses to students in grades 8 through 12.  STEM students spent their first day of Spring Break taking courses ranging from Anomalistic Psychology to Congruent Numbers to Japanese Drumming and Bacterial Biotechnology to Network Security to Cancer Pathology. The participants were served lunch and also took a tour of the campus.  Thanks to Columbia University and STEM biology teacher Danielle Hoffman for helping to make this trip a terrific success!!

As we begin our celebration of Women’s History Month, the Schools of STEM and SET hosted Asia Shindelman, an 89 year old Holocaust survivor. Mrs. Shindelman recounted her harrowing experiences in the Jewish ghettos and Nazi concentration camps with Mrs Wojcik’s Honors English II, Ms. Gitelle’s Honors English IV, and Mr. Solis’ TV Production classes. We wish to thank Mrs. Wojcik for coordinating this event and Mr. Solis for opening his TV Studio to us and taping the speech. We wish to extend an extra special thank you to Mrs. Shindelman for sharing her life story with us.
