April 26, 2018 – A professional dancer, Maria del Mar Valle Figueroa, visited students from JFK’s Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Academy.  Miss Figueroa is 16 years old and is the reigning world champion in salsa dancing.  She has been dancing competitively since she was four years of age.  During her visit today, she danced the salsa and shared with the Ms. Young Suh’s music appreciation students how she enjoys dancing salsa.  She also shared with the group how one needs to be disciplined in juggling schoolwork and rigorous rehearsals.  STEM is grateful for her visit and we wish her the very best in her future.

On Saturday, April 21st, Dr. Dante Petretti, interim principal of STEM, spent the afternoon in Philadelphia on the University of Pennsylvania campus. STEM was selected to be one of 11 service partners for graduate students completing their capstone project in the U. Penn Masters of Applied Positive Psychology program (MAPP). The Green Team, pictured below, completed their final project and presented it at the annual event with the ten other teams.  The Green Team’s project is a comprehensive plan with resources to support STEM’s multi-year Resilience and Grit program. Thanks so much to Leona Brandwene, Danielle Hoffman, The Green Team, and the University of Pennsylvania!

20 Students from STEM @ JFK participated in “Columbia Splash” on Saturday, March 31st, 2018.  Columbia Splash is a program that offers a variety of courses to students in grades 8 through 12.  STEM students spent their first day of Spring Break taking courses ranging from Anomalistic Psychology to Congruent Numbers to Japanese Drumming and Bacterial Biotechnology to Network Security to Cancer Pathology. The participants were served lunch and also took a tour of the campus.  Thanks to Columbia University and STEM biology teacher Danielle Hoffman for helping to make this trip a terrific success!!
